Fossil Hash Plate Huge Mixture Of Michigan Fossils In Limestone

This is a piece of limestone filled with fossils that once sat at the bottom of a salt water ocean in Michigan. These fossils date back to the Devonian period.

This is called a "hash plate" because it is a hash of the fallen organic materials on the bottom of the ocean that became fossilized. A hash plate is a mixture of many different plants and animals.

This is also known as a "death plate" or "mortality plate" because it is a permanent snap shot of a mass of dead animals.
